What Food Is Bad for Your Skin?


If you want a healthy and glowing complexion, it is important to eat a diet filled with nutritious foods. It is equally as important to remove certain foods from your diet because they can contribute to blemishes, uneven tone and a dull appearance. Allison Tannis notes in her book, "Feed Your Skin, Starve Your Wrinkles," that keeping these foods out of your diet may help you achieve healthy and younger looking skin.


Foods with sugar in them can not only lead to weight gain, diabetes and heart disease, but they can also decrease the health and appearance of your skin. Tannis notes that a diet high in sugar can cause unhealthy skin that is dull and blemished. If you restrict your intake of cakes, cookies, candy, soda and other sugary desserts, you may notice a difference in the glow and appearance of your skin. If you enjoy the taste of sugar, choose naturally sweet foods, such as fruit or honey, because they contribute to healthier looking skin.

Fried Foods

Grease and fat causes your skin to look unhealthy and may lead to excess oil build up as well. Doris J. Day and Sondra Forsyth, report in their book, "Forget the Facelift: Turn Back the Clock with a Revolutionary Program for Ageless Skin," that fried, greasy foods are among the worst for the health of your skin. Limit how much fast food, fried chicken and potato chips you eat and you will be taking a step in the right direction towards healing your damaged skin and restoring its vitality and glow.

White Bread

White bread is often high in sugar and lacks proper nutrition. Tannis notes that foods low in fiber, such as white bread, can lead to inflammation, which causes your skin to look dull and unhealthy. Replace white bread with whole wheat bread and your skin tone may start to improve. Other foods made with white flour and sugar, such as pasta, can cause similar inflammation problems. Tannis also suggests reaching for nutritious foods high in fiber, such as fruits and vegetables, which may also improve the appearance of your skin.

Salty Foods

Your body needs a certain amount of sodium to work properly, but if your diet is too high in salt, your skin may begin to suffer as a result. Salt can cause bloating, which leads to puffy and tired looking skin. Foods high in salt, such as potato chips, crackers, frozen dinners and canned soup, should be limited in your diet to reduce how much sodium is in your body. Day and Forsyth also suggest increasing your water intake, which will help flush excess salt from your body. Removing salt from your body will improve the appearance of your skin and help you achieve a healthy complexion.
