Your skin is one of the first things people notice about you; it announces your health and vitality to the world. Your diet plays a large role in determining your overall health, as well as your skin's health. If you want to look younger, certain nutrients can help to improve your skin's elasticity and appearance. You may not get enough of some skin-friendly vitamins and minerals in your diet, and supplements can ensure that you do.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A helps to maintain your skin and to repair damaged skin cells. Vitamin A helps your skin stay supple and healthy. Without enough vitamin A in your diet, you may experience dry, flaky skin. Vitamin A comes in the forms of retinol and beta-carotene. It is not possible to get too much beta carotene in your diet or from supplements, according to the Harvard School of Public Health, but it is possible to ingest too much retinol. You should therefore go for a skin supplement that includes most or all of its vitamin A in the form of beta-carotene.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, a group of vitamins that combat the effects of aging on the body. Vitamin E helps to protect the skin from the aging affects of sun exposure, such as wrinkling and loss of elasticity. The Mayo Clinic advises taking vitamin E supplements with caution, as high dosages may pose serious health risks. Include a supplement with vitamin E in your diet if you don't get enough on a daily basis from the foods you eat. The National Institutes of Health advise adults to consume 15 mg of vitamin E daily.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is another antioxidant that boosts your skin health by fighting the effects of free radicals in the environment. Free radicals include pollution, the sun and smoke. Free radicals drain collagen and elastin from your skin, causing wrinkles and loss of elasticity. Vitamin C also boosts your immune system and can help fight skin infections and bacteria build-up. The Institute of Medicine advises adult males to consume 75 mg of vitamin C daily and adult females to consume 60 mg.

A supplement with minerals can help to improve your skin's elasticity, as well. Selenium helps to fight the effects of free radicals on your skin, helping to preserve a more youthful appearance. The Institute of Medicine advises adults to consume 40 mg a day of selenium. Copper is another skin-friendly mineral, as it helps to boost your production of elastin, which makes skin supple. Consume 700 mg a day of copper, IOM advises.
