Scalp acne is a common type of acne, which affects both men and women and usually occurs on the scalp.
A large number of people are still unaware of this type of acne because unlike other types of acne it does not affect face, chest, arms or back of a person. It is also known as scalp folliculitis, which is a less severe form of this acne and is very distressing for the sufferers.

Scalp acne is very irritating and usually appears as a result of great stress in the form of small white-yellowish pustules. In the beginning the pimples are small and hard and usually appear on the upper forehead at the hairline. The scalp usually develops this condition when it is left unwashed and oily for a long period of time or when hair care products containing a higher level of oil are used on the scalp. There is also a more severe form of scalp acne known as acne necrotica miliaris in which larger pimples with black-colored crusts appear on the scalp. These are more obvious when they appear at the edge of the hair.

It is very easy to handle and treat mild type of scalp acne, which usually gets cure with the help of some over the counter medications. But for a more severe type it is recommended to consult a dermatologist. A safe way of treating scalp acne is by keeping hair clean and oil free. Also it is a good idea to follow a well balanced diet that has enough fresh fruit and vegetables. Avoiding too many fatty foods containing oils and drinking a lot of water is also useful for treating scalp acne.

The sufferers should apply a skin cleanser containing salicylic acid on the affected area with the help of a cotton ball and avoid using products containing benzoil peroxide or other peroxide ingredients in order to protect the health and color of the hair. Antidandruff shampoos along with an effective conditioner also work well to treat the scalp acne.
