Nose Ring Cleaning Tips

Keeping your nose ring clean is a crucial step in avoiding infections, especially if the piercing is fresh. Nasal piercings take anywhere from two to four months to heal completely, and they are quite susceptible to problems during that time period. Proper care is key, but luckily it's a fairly simple process that takes just a few minutes each day.

Use Gentle Cleaner

Always use a gentle cleaner on the nose ring. Cleaners that contain rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide will dry out and irritate the piercing, and antiseptic creams block air circulation to the hole. Mix about 1/4 tsp. of non-iodized sea salt into 8 oz. of warm distilled water to make a safe, gentle cleaner for your nose ring. Store the cleaner in a container with an airtight lid.

Keep Your Hands Clean

Never touch your nose ring with dirty hands, as that can introduce bacteria and dirt to the fresh piercing. Wash your hands with a mild, fragrance-free liquid soap before you clean or rotate the ring.

Stick to a Schedule

Stick to a cleaning schedule to make sure your ring remains sanitized. Clean the ring twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. Additionally, each time you take a shower you may rub a drop of unscented liquid soap into the piercing and onto the ring as long as you rinse it completely clean. Don't clean the ring more often than this, as that can irritate the hole, according to the Center for Young Women's Health at Children's Hospital Boston.

Soak the Area

Soak the area with the sea salt solution each time you clean the ring. Remove crusted patches from the ring with a wet paper towel, then place a cotton ball dripping with the cleaner over the piercing area. Hold it there for five to 10 minutes, then remove it and rinse it with warm water to remove salty residue.

Be Gentle

You must be very gentle with nose rings. When you're rinsing or drying the jewelry, always use a paper towel. Cloth towels can snag on the nose ring and hurt the piercing. They can also harbor bacteria if they're dirty, which can infect the piercing.
