Choose natural foods over vitamin supplements for natural skin care. Your body needs natural foods in order to absorb vitamin and mineral supplements, so your skin care regime should include nutrient-rich natural foods. If your skin looks dull, feels dry and tight, or see signs of premature aging, you may need to add certain natural foods to your diet to improve your skin condition.

Fruits

Fruits are an excellent source of vitamin C. Your skin needs vitamin C to repair and renew skin cells. The essential vitamin plays an important role in collagen development, which is vitally important for aging skin that tends to lose its firmness. Fruits can improve skin tone, keep skin plump, and prevent skin oxidation caused by damaging free radicals. Citrus fruits are high in vitamin C. Other fruits you may enjoy that contain vitamin C include apples, strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, melons and pears.

Vegetables

Vegetables contain vitamins and minerals needed for healthy skin, but vegetables also contain important phytochemicals, which act as antioxidants for the skin. Catechins, indoles and other important antioxidants fight off free radicals that damage the skin -- one of the culprits of premature aging of skin. Some of the vegetables rich in antioxidants include cabbage, broccoli, red bell peppers, onions, figs, corn, mushrooms and beets. If you have gout or prone to kidney stones, Reader's Digest Association's "Fight Back With Food" recommends avoiding beet greens because they are high in oxalates, which contribute the forming of kidney stones.

Fats

One of the reasons your diet should contain essential fatty acids is to help protect the skin's outer lipid layer. According to Sunflower Dermatology, dry skin tends to age quicker than oily skin, mainly because dry skin doesn't get enough moisture in the upper layers of the skin. Essential fatty acids, such as omega-3 and omega-6 protect against premature skin aging and environmental factors that deplete the skin's natural moisture barrier. Choose healthy fatty acids such as olive oil, safflower oil and canola oil to keep skin protected, nourished and smooth.

Lipoic Acid Foods

Foods rich in lipoic acid can improve the overall look and feel of skin, but that's not all. Lipoic acid may protect skin from the damaging effects of the sun. Research published in the September 2010 edition of the "British Journal of Dermatology" found that participants who ate ttomato paste, which is rich in lipoic acid, had a significant reduction in scar tissue caused by the damaging effects of the sun. The participants ate 16 mg of lycopene -- the equivalent of 2 oz. of tomato paste -- each day for 12 weeks. Green leafy foods and animal proteins are good sources of lycopene. Broccoli, collard greens and spinach are some of the greens that contain lipoic acid. Meat products rich in lipoic acid include poultry, calf liver and round steak.
