Overview

Winter weather can be harsh on your skin, leading to dryness and itchiness. The combination of colder temperatures, rain or snow and wind contribute to your skin's condition. Dry skin can appear on any part of your body, including your arms, legs, hands, torso and back. You try not to scratch and make your condition worse, but until you rub lotion on your body, you don't get relief. You need to improve your skin care regimen, including how you wash your skin and moisturize it.

Step 1

Make your showers lukewarm and short--no longer than 10 minutes at a time. Exposing your skin to hot water for longer periods of time strips beneficial oils from your skin. Use a mild bath soap only on the areas of your body that it's needed, such as your underarms, feet and genital areas.

Step 2

Pat your skin nearly dry with a soft towel--don't rub. Apply a moisturizer to your body within three minutes of getting out of the shower so you can seal moisture into your skin. If you use bath oil, rub it gently into your skin as soon as you've dried it.

Step 3

Apply any prescription steroid creams for any dermatitis spots. Your doctor should prescribe this kind of cream for a period of 10 to 15 days. Use the cream only as prescribed on red patches of skin, up to two times per day. Apply the steroid cream before any moisturizing cream.

Step 4

Increase the level of humidity in your home with a humidifier. You can add a humidifier to the central heating system to add moisture to the entire home or use a portable humidifier in your bedroom during the night hours.

Step 5

Continue moisturizing your skin even after the dryness has been healed. Use the moisturizer indefinitely to prevent the dry skin from returning.
