Overview

As we age, the muscles in our faces lose their strength, and gravity also helps to draw the face downward. Common signs of a sagging face are the formation of lines running between the corners of the nose and the lips; these unattractive lines are known as the nasal labial fold. A cosmetic surgeon can use facial implants to lift the fold of skin, or you can practice facial exercises to help improve the appearance of existing lines and prevent further facial sagging.

Step 1

Place your three middle fingers vertically at each side of your nose. Using your thumbs to anchor the flesh, grasp as much cheek fat as possible. Squeeze the cheek and by contracting the cheek muscle, lift your cheeks up toward the center of your eyes. Hold the pose while saying in your mind, "Lovely to see you." Repeat 20 times, at least twice a week. According to Louise Anette, author of "Ageless If You Dare," this exercise will help to lift sagging cheeks.

Step 2

Place three fingers under each eyelid, on top of your cheekbones. Press the flesh downward, and hold. Contract the cheek muscle by lifting the cheeks as high as you are able.Hold while counting to six, relax and repeat 10 times. Deborah Crowley, who designed the Flex Effect facial resistance program, recommends performing this exercise at least five times a week to further lift the cheeks and prevent facial sagging.

Step 3

Stand in front of a mirror. Formulate the shape of the letter "O" with your mouth, without wrinkling your top lip. While maintaining the position, attempt to smile, gently lifting the corners of your mouth. Hold the pose, while keeping the rest of your face relaxed. Move your tongue against the inside of your right cheek, and press it firmly against the inner wall. Hold for several seconds, then move the tongue to another part of your cheek, pushing it against the cheek creating as much resistance with your tongue as you can muster. Repeat, changing the position of the tongue approximately 20 times on each side of the face.

Juliette Kando, author of "Natural Face Lift" claims that apart from serving as a tool to tone the cheeks, exercising with the tongue has an additional benefit. The base of the tongue is situated under the chin, and when you perform the exercise it is being pulled upward and this movement will help tone a double chin. Kando states the "tongue-in-cheek" exercise will help to tone many different small muscle groups which will work together to regain youthful and firm cheeks.
