Overview

Acne occurs when the pores become clogged with oil, dead skin cells and bacteria. When the pore becomes clogged, it can turn red or purplish in color---making an acne blemish all the more noticeable. For this reason, treatments for acne redness should include anti-inflammatory applications that can reduce the redness as the blemish heals. Always be gentle when handling acne blemishes and use clean hands when applying medications or treatments to avoid introducing bacteria into the pore.

Step 1

Apply a small amount of toothpaste---not gel---to any acne blemishes and leave on overnight, according to Acne Team. This should help to remove redness and reduce oil in and around the pimple, which can help it to heal faster. Remove the toothpaste with warm water after waking.

Step 2

Apply cucumber or tomato juice to the acne blemish or blemishes and leave on the face for 15 minutes, according to Acne Team. This treatment has anti-inflammatory effects and can work quickly to reduce redness. Rinse the juice off with lukewarm water.

Step 3

Apply an ice pack to the face for 10 minutes, according to Yoga Health Benefits. Make sure to cover the icepack with a protective cloth in order to avoid damaging the skin. The cold temperature of the ice pack will cause blood vessels to constrict, reducing the skin's red appearance. Because this is only a temporary fix, you may need to reapply several times throughout the course of the day in order to experience the benefits.

Step 4

Dab a makeup concealer that is two shades lighter than your skin onto the blemish. In order to neutralize its red color, you may wish to choose a shade that has a slight green tint. Although this will not cure the acne blemish, it can reduce its red appearance throughout the course of the day. Be sure to wash off the concealer at night to avoid clogging the pores.

Step 5

Apply a facial mask that contains an anti-inflammatory ingredient, such as aloe vera, chamomile, fenugreek, jojoba, oats or cucumber, according to Northwestern Health Sciences University. This mask will help to reduce redness and soothe the skin.
