The Gujarati are an ethnic group from the state of Gujarat in northwestern India. The Gujarati have their own language, and many practice vegetarianism. Many Gujarati skin care practices incorporate the principles of Ayurveda, and use natural herbs, fruits and vegetables as part of their regime. The Gujarati use items native to the Gujarat region, however, people in the United States can follow the same ayurvedic principles using items available in the US.

Dry Skin Tips

Natural oils, such as coconut and olive, provide moisture to the skin without the chemical additives in many commercial lotions. Those with nut allergies should try grapeseed or avocado oil. A mild face cleanser made with milk, aloe vera as well as vegetable glycerin and honey will cleanse the face and restore moisture to the skin. Those with dry skin should moisturize their bodies daily, especially after bathing. Additionally, only use soap under the arm, in the genital area, and on the feet. Mix together 1 cup of brown sugar and 1 cup of olive oil to use as a scrub on the arms and legs.

Oily Skin Tips

Make an oil-absorbing facial mask by mixing green clay with distilled water. Apply the mask to your face, let it dry then rinse with cool water. Use a light oil to moisturize after washing to help maintain the moisture balance --- drying out oily skin may stimulate the oil glands to produce even more oil to compensate. Apply a light oil, such as sesame oil, and wipe away the excess with a cotton ball. Wash the face with an exfoliating scrub made with bentonite clay, coarse-ground grits and rolled oats. Add a tablespoon of the dry scrub to a tablespoon of plain yogurt and wash your face with the mixture. Moisturize the body, as needed, with a light oil.

Combination Skin Tips

Combination skin may be oily in some parts, such as the "T" zone which runs across the forehead and down the center of the face, and dry in others. A mask of rolled oats, buttermilk and honey helps restore the moisture balance to the skin. A mild cleanser made with distilled water, aloe vera and vegetable glycerin as well as vitamin E oil will dry up oil patches without over-drying the skin. Moisturize daily, as needed, with a light vegetable oil.
