Reduce reflux-producing foods to eliminate symptoms of laryngopharyngeal reflux. According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology, laryngopharyngeal reflux is defined as acidic stomach contents flowing backwards up the esophagus toward the mouth. It travels far enough to irritate the back of the throat and mouth. Symptoms include bitter taste in the mouth, burning sensation in the back of the throat, hoarse voice, and difficulty breathing. Avoid foods such as chocolate, coffee, and oranges to lower occurrence of symptoms.

Chocolate and Peppermint

Chocolate and peppermint both contain natural components that irritate the esophageal sphincter. Avoid chocolate and peppermint themselves, as well as chocolate and peppermint flavored products. These include drinks, candies, ice cream, tea and other flavored products. Choose instead milder flavored desserts such as vanilla, caramel and low acid fruits.

Fatty and Spicy

Fatty and fried foods remain in the stomach for a long time because they take long to digest. Replace them with lower fat foods to encourage faster emptying of the stomach. Choose healthier cooking methods such as baking, grilling, steaming and broiling. Food with intense spicy flavoring such as onion, garlic and pepper can irritate the esophagus with their natural heat. Choose instead mild herbs such as basil, rosemary and thyme for flavoring.

Citrus Fruits and Tomatoes

Citrus fruits and tomatoes are produce products that are naturally high in acid. Extra acid in the diet can contribute to the burning sensation in the esophagus. Instead of citrus fruits, choose low acid fruits such as apples, bananas, peaches and berries. Instead of tomatoes, use low acid vegetables such as cabbage, spinach and broccoli. Replace tomato sauce with basil pesto for pasta.

Caffeine

Caffeine is a naturally occurring stimulant found in foods. Coffee, tea, chocolate and cola contain caffeine. This stimulant irritates the esophageal sphincter and allows food to flow backwards up the esophagus towards the mouth. Remove caffeine containing foods from your diet for best results. Choose instead drinks such as milk, water, and low acid fruit juices. Choose other desserts besides chocolate.

Carbonation

Carbonation is most commonly found in sodas. Sparkling waters and juices are growing in popularity and also contain carbonation. Carbonation induces belching and increases risk for reflux. It opens the sphincter for air which can also allow food to pass back up. Choose non carbonated drinks to eliminate symptoms.

Alcohol

Alcohol relaxes the esophageal sphincter. This relaxation give opportunity for food and drink to flow back up the esophagus toward the mouth. Remove alcoholic beverages and cooking alcohol to reduce reflux symptoms. Speak with your physician if you have difficulty reducing alcoholic beverages.
