Ankle sprain: definition
The sprain is a torn ligament. In the case of a simple distension, it is benign. In case of failure, it is called severe. This injury is very common (6000 cases per day in France). It is in any sport, from 15 to 20% of sports injuries.
Ankle sprain: causes
One false step, a jump or a fall can cause a sprain. From the foot down and suddenly within.
Ankle sprain: symptoms
Pain is variable, sometimes not felt, and its intensity is not proportional to gravity. You can hear a cracking sound, a sign of ligament rupture. When the ankle has cooled, back pain, and swelling appears. Bruising may occur at the outer part of the foot and ankle, moving the toes. The support may be impossible.
Ankle sprain: Prevention
The first advice on the boot. Avoid any shoe that increases instability (high heels and purposes). Then, if we jog, it is better to run on smooth ground loose, no holes. And make no negligence on the grounds that it is an ankle, as rigid a sock.
Ankle sprain: testing
For the diagnosis of a sprain, the general practitioner first performs a clinical research with a swollen ankle in pre-and external palpation to find the sore spots, and the study of mobility. After clinical examination, radiographic examination should be requested in doubt so that it can eliminate the differential diagnosis of ankle sprain. Finally, we can also use ultrasound to visualize the different types of lesions.
Ankle sprain: Treatments
To heal the ligaments of the ankle, it must stop. Healing is 3 weeks for a mild sprain, and twice for a severe sprain. Knowing that the movements of the foot in line does not draw on the ligaments, the plaster is often unnecessary. It may also be responsible for muscle wasting, decalcification of bone, or phlebitis. The most common treatment involves placing an elastic bandage. Another treatment, support and also allowing a normal boot, is to place a pneumatic splint. Analgesics and anti-inflammatory participating in comfort without changing healing. Finally, rehabilitation is not systematic and not generally useful.
Ankle sprain: Evolution
We should not trivialize the thing and ignore the risk of another injury likely to have worsening before surgery, such as a fracture. Then, if the treatment is not adequate, there is a risk of instability of the ankle. The patient then experiences a feeling of insecurity that worsens while playing sports or walking on uneven ground, and may relapse at any time.
Finally, there is often painful sequelae more intense and frequent as the initial treatment was inadequate or absent.
