Overview

Candidiasis is an infection named after the fungus Candida albicans. Healthy amounts of Candida are present in the body, but symptoms occur when an overgrowth of Candida fungus is present. Causes of candidiasis include bacterial infections, overweight, pregnancy and a weakened immune system. Common symptoms are white patches in the mouth or throat, cracks at the corners of the mouth and itchy skin rashes or blisters. Yeast infections are another common name for candidiasis.

Types

Four types of candidiasis exist, which affect the mouth, skin, vagina and esophagus. Oral candidiasis is also known as thrush, which is classified by redness and cracks on the corners of the mouth or white patches on the tongue. Skin candidiasis is classified by patches of painful, red, moist skin in the creases of the body, commonly under the belly, breasts and groin. Vaginitis is a yeast infection causing burning, pain and itching of the vagina with possible white discharge. Esophagitis is classified by an infection causing pain while swallowing, and pain can radiate down to the breastbone.

Probiotic and Vitamin Treatments

Probiotics are the healthy bacteria that live in your bowel and help your immune system attack and clear bacteria that causes inflammation. Lactobacillus acidophilus or bifidobacterium are two common types of probiotics found in yogurt, dairy products or as supplements in capsule form. The antioxidant vitamins C and E and the mineral selenium can reduce inflammation and support your immune system in the fight against candidiasis. Essential omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids from fish, nuts or supplements can also help reduce inflammation. Many people who suffer from candidiasis are deficient in calcium, which can help with blood clotting, and magnesium to balance the calcium intake. Caprylic acid is a fatty acid that has antifungal and antibacterial fighting properties.

Herbal Treatments

Taking an herbal garlic supplement or one clove of garlic a day can produce antifungal properties. Other common antifungal spices are oregano, sage, cloves and cinnamon. Taking pau d'arco bark in tea form can also provide antifungal properties. Pomegranate gel can treat oral thrush in association with mouth pain from dentures. A substance created by bees known as propolis also has antifungal properties against oral thrush and mouth pain from dentures.

Misconceptions

Some healthcare providers support the theory that dairy products and foods with large amounts of yeast, such as cheese, peanuts and alcohol, can contribute to candidiasis infections. The scientifically unproven anti-Candida diet encourages limited consumption of processed foods as well as the avoidance of alcohol, simple sugars and yeast.

Warning

Before the use of any vitamin or herbal supplement, consult your physician to ensure the supplement is safe to use. Herbs take time to produce health-promoting effects. With any sign of adverse side effects, you should discontinue the herbal supplement use and consult a physician. In most cases, physicians will prescribe a drug to combat the symptoms of candidiasis, and dietary treatment or supplement use is for complementary treatment with drugs.
