Lotions to Prevent Stretch Marks

Lotions to Prevent Stretch Marks

Stretch marks can happen during pregnancy, growth spurts or a sudden weight gain---any time your skin needs to stretch to accommodate a change in your shape, according to Mederma. Although there's no universal cure for stretch marks, some lotions can make a difference in their color and texture.

Mederma Stretch Marks Therapy

This lotion claims to reduce the texture and discoloration associated with stretch marks, thanks to active ingredients that include hyaluronic acid and botanical extracts. According to the manufacturer, 8 out of 10 women noticed visible improvement in the appearance of their stretch marks after using this lotion twice a day for three months. Mederma warns that no product can get rid of old stretch marks entirely; your best bet is to begin using a stretch-mark-alleviating product at the first sign of new stretch marks.

Palmer's Cocoa Butter

This brand offers an inexpensive cream and lotion designed to prevent stretch marks. The formulas each include skin-plumping collagen and elastin, vitamin E, cocoa butter and shea butter. In addition to providing moisture, these formulas claim to smooth stretch marks caused by pregnancy or generalized weight gain. The E.T. Browne Drug Company praises its Palmer's imprint as the world's top cocoa butter brand, on sale in more than 80 countries. The brand has been featured in magazines such as "Essence," "Fit Pregnancy," "Ladies' Home Journal," "Fitness" and "American Baby."

StriVectin-SD Intensive Concentrate for Stretch Marks & Wrinkles

This company's famous anti-wrinkle formulas began as stretch mark creams---the wrinkle treatment was an unexpected bonus for the product's initial test subjects. The current stretch mark-fighting formula includes a proprietary blend of NIA-114+ peptides designed to improve the look of stretch marks in two to eight weeks. According to StriVectin, these peptides produce collagen, improving skin's texture and youthfulness. With continued use, they say, your natural cell turnover increases and your skin's elasticity improves, all contributing to the diminished look and color of stretch marks.

Vivaplex Stretch Mark Crème & Lotion

Developed by a Beverly Hills dermatologist who won a Nobel Prize while researching skin hormone medicine, Vivaplex stakes its claim to effectiveness on the use of topical creatine. Creatine is a naturally occurring nutrient that offers skin an espresso-style jolt of energy to jump-start its healing and protective processes. According to the product website, while 75 percent of pregnant women with no treatment developed stretch marks, only 14 percent of women treated with Vivaplex developed the unsightly marks. The manufacturer also claims Vivaplex fights existing stretch marks 33 percent better than a prescription retinoid treatment.
