Dry and wrinkled skin is an obvious sign of aging unwelcomed by many people. Breakthroughs in modern dermatology have led to discoveries that may help keep skin younger, longer. Nurse practitioner Marcelle Pick of Women to Women Medical Clinic in Yarmouth, Maine, says that the aging of the skin is biological, not chronological, and a primary cause is internal inflammation. Some herbs have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can be used as part of a holistic approach to ensure smooth and healthy skin. Check with your dermatologist before using herbal supplements for possible contraindications with other medications.

Aloe Vera

Recognized by its succulent and spike-edged leaves, the aloe vera plant is one of the mildest plants in the herbal apothecary. This popular plant of Africa has been the subject of many scientific studies for a range of medicinal uses, including skin care. Reducing inflammation inside the body and out is one of the benefits of aloe vera. A 2003 study conducted by the Department of Dermatology at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago found that topical applications of aloe vera gel on the hands of subjects, produced a consistent and positive outcome of improved skin integrity, decreased appearance of wrinkles and redness. Subjects in the study had occupational dry skin and dermatitis. Consult your medical adviser before using aloe vera for serious skin problems.

Typically used for its culinary benefits, the herb turmeric also has healthful properties for the skin. The oil from crushed rhizomes of the turmeric plant, is a natural moisturizer and is used by the women of India to improve their complexion. According to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the oil of the turmeric plant has anti-inflammatory properties. Additionally, turmeric is a powerful antioxidant that prohibits oxidative DNA damage throughout the body, including its largest organ, the skin. Check with your physician for possible herb/drug interactions if you are taking any medications.

Bladder Wrack

A member of the kelp family, bladder wrack is both a nutritive and medicinal plant of the sea containing all of the minerals essential to human health, and many vitamins too. A Japanese study conducted at the Biological Science Laboratories of the Kao Corporation discovered that bladder wrack extract applied to the cheeks of human subjects over a five-week period caused a decrease in skin thickness and improved the elasticity of the skin. Smooth skin goes hand in hand with reducing skin thickness. Evaluate the risks and benefits of all nutraceuticals with your physician.
