How to Be Your Own Skin Care Specialist
Skin is the body's largest organ. It weighs about 8 lbs on average, and covers 22 square feet, according to "National Geographic." Composed of a complex system of cell layers, nerves and glands, skin protect the body against the outside world, "National Geographic" reports on its website, and this organ also acts as a waterproof, insulating shield, which guards the body against the extremes of temperature, sunlight and chemicals.
You don't have to hire a professional to teach you how to take care of this "amazingly versatile organ." You can be your own skin care specialist.
Stay hydrated. Keep a supply of drinking water with you. There are many non-plastic, reusable drink containers on the market, so you can keep your skin in good shape and be green at the same time.
To calculate how much water you should drink every day, multiply 0.5 ounces by your body weight in pounds, according to the website Totally Drinkable. If you weigh 150 pounds, the site calculates, you should drink a minimum of 75 ounces, or nine to 10 glasses, of water every day.
Brush your skin with a dry body brush, says India-Jewel Jackson, the director of Glam Wellness. "It may feel kind of odd but it is more effective than brushing your skin with a wet soapy brush or sponge," she reports on the website Glam Spirit.
Protect your skin from the sun. Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor, or SPF, of at least 30; wear protective clothing; and seek the shade when appropriate, suggests the American Academy of Dermatology, AAD.
Eat a healthy diet rich in fresh fruits, healthy grains and other healthy foods, says the AAD. "Our skin is made of protein and consuming some protein is necessary for healthy skin," the AAD reports.
Moisturize dry skin. After a bath or shower is the best time to use a moisturizer, the AAD says, to trap water in the skin. Apply moisturizer several times a day.
