Foods That Produce Elastin

Foods That Produce Elastin

Elastin and collagen are among a class of structural proteins in your body. These proteins work together to help build and maintain the integrity of your connective tissue. Elastin can be found in your artery walls, intestines, skin and lungs. It gives your skin flexibility and strength. Many foods you eat can help produce the elastin you need.

Foods Rich in Copper

Foods that contain copper help produce elastin in your body. The Linus Pauling Institute reports that a copper enzyme called lysyl oxidase is essential for the cross-linking of collagen and elastin in your body. Both collagen and elastin are necessary for the production of strong, flexible connective tissue. This copper enzyme provides support to the connective tissue in your heart, blood vessels and bones. Copper can be found in organ meats and shellfish, such as liver, crab meat, clams and oysters. Other sources include hazelnuts, sunflower seeds, peanut butter, lentils and shredded wheat cereal.

Foods Rich in Vitamin C

Vitamin C, in combination with copper, can help form elastin in your body, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that can be found in an abundance of foods. Good sources include citrus fruits, such as lemons, limes and oranges. Other sources include strawberries, melon and broccoli. Read nutrition labels to determine the amount of vitamin C in foods.

Protein-Rich Food

Protein-rich food can help produce elastin in your body. According to Medical News Today, proteins act to build, strengthen and repair tissues and help build collagen and elastin. Good animal sources of protein include organ meats, poultry, turkey, eggs and dairy products. Good plant sources of protein include nuts and seeds, beans and legumes, and soy products. Whole grains, such as quinoa, also supply some protein to your diet.
