When a woman enters the stage of life called menopause, her body goes through many changes. One part of a woman's body that is greatly affected by menopause is her skin. This is one organ that loses elasticity, fat tissue and moisture at this time. Collagen production also slows down when a woman goes through menopause, and skin becomes thinner. This is a time when skin care needs to be tailored to meet the needs of the woman going through this transitional period. There are a few ways menopausal women can help keep skin looking young and radiant.

Eat foods that can help you keep your skin young looking. Foods that will help keep your skin firm include carrots, which contain vitamin A and sulfur-containing onions. Drink plenty of water (eight 8-oz. ounce glasses a day) to plump up skin cells and keep wrinkles at bay, and avoid foods and drinks with caffeine, such as coffee and cola, as caffeine dehydrates skin and accentuates wrinkles. Avoid alcohol, as it also dehydrates the skin. Sip chamomile tea for hydration. Do not smoke, becuase nicotine prevents oxygen from being delivered to the skin. This can contribute to skin wrinkling. Reduce the amount of sugar in your diet, as it causes glycation, a process that ages the skin. Eliminate red meat from your diet to prevent moisture loss.

Support Measures

Have a facial once a month to keep skin young looking. The facial massage given during a facial stimulates collagen production. Steam used in a facial moisturizes the skin. Exercise regularly to bring nourishing blood to the skin. Give yourself a moisturizing mask once a week to keep skin from drying out, and use a moisturizer every day, especially in the winter. Select products that contain ginseng, rose oil, avocado oil or collagen to keep skin youthful looking. Spray your face periodically during the day with rose water.

Preventive Measures

Always wear a sun block that contains an SPF of 15 or higher whenever you will be out in the sun for longer than 15 minutes. This will protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun. Treat your skin gently at all times, and avoid stretching the delicate skin around the eyes. Avoid squinting, as this will prevent wrinkle formation around your eyes. Sleeping on your back will also help avoid wrinkles, while sleeping face-down may contribute to the formation of wrinkles. Wear sunglasses to protect the skin around the eyes.
