As you age, you may notice your skin undergoing many changes. Aging skin starts to develop wrinkles, dryness, lines and age spots, and loses its elasticity. Your skin also becomes thinner, loses its fat and takes longer to heal, says the National Institutes of Health. There are a variety of tips available for you to help aging skin.

Use Sunscreen

Protecting your skin from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays will be your leading defense against further damage to your aging skin. Sun damage is the leading culprit for damaging skin, says the dermatology site, operated by the American Academy of Dermatology. Protect your skin by applying sunscreen any time you plan on being in the sun. Sunscreen serves two purposes. It can prevent any further skin damage and protect your skin. Use sunscreens that have at least a 30 sun protection factor (SPF) for the best results. You can apply sunscreen to your bare skin, or use it underneath your makeup. Or, use over-the-counter products that contain sunscreen; it's found in serums, creams, lotions and moisturizers. You can also use makeup that contains sunscreen.

Keep Your Skin Hydrated

Aging skin loses its capability to produce efficient amounts of moisture. This lack of moisture can lead to a variety of aging skin signs. Use moisturizer to replace this lost hydration and increase your skin's water level. This will help you regain your youthful skin tone while also diminishing the appearance of fine lines. Moisturizer can help your skin cells seal in water and is an essential element of an aging skin care routine. Use ointments and creams to obtain the best hydration results. The Mayo Clinic says that moisturizers are good for temporarily masking tiny lines and creases. Apply moisturizer in the morning to help protect your skin during the day. Apply it prior to bedtime to help your skin repair itself while you sleep.

Make certain your moisturizer contains active ingredients known for helping the skin hold water. These include lactic acid, urea, glycerin and dimethicone. Other beneficial ingredients are hyaluronic acid, lanolin, mineral oil and petroleum jelly.

Air humidifiers will increase your skin's hydration level. If you do not want to apply moisturizer to your skin, these machines are a viable alternative. By increasing the water content of your surrounding air, the moisture can be absorbed into your skin.

Sleeping Position Matters

Your sleeping positions matter for aging skin, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Lying on your face while sleeping leads to developing forehead wrinkles. The wrinkles intensify as you age and will not disappear during your waking hours. Sleeping on your side leads to developing wrinkles (or lines) along your chin and cheek areas. So, you can diminish your chances of damaging your aging skin by sleeping on your back.
