Black skin care is far from easy. While the dark pigment is intended to provide better protection from the sun's rays--and its tone can be appealing and beautiful to many people--dark skin can also be sensitive, complicating traditional skin care. The pigmentation in the skin is at risk of reacting negatively to certain products, resulting in discolorations that can linger for years. But there are many skin products on the market that specialize in dark skin, and you can do several things to keep your skin healthy and glowing.

Know Your Skin Type

Many black women have sensitive skin that tends to be dry. If this is the case, products with ingredients like benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid can also exacerbate dryness and irritation. These acids can also be the cause of discolorations. Visit a dermatologist or take a skin-type test, then stick to products that cater to those types.

Moisturize

Skin of all shades frequently needs moisturizing lotion to prevent dryness, but the effects of dry skin can be more evident with dark skin, which tends to appear ashy and gray when it dries out.

Use Sunscreen

Dark skin provides some added protection from the sun over other skin types, but it isn't immune to the effects of the sun's rays. According to Discovery Health, skin cancer tends to be less common in black people but has a higher fatality rate. It's recommended to apply a sunscreen or moisturizer with an SPF of 15 to 30 every morning.

Be Aware of Medication

Some oral medications can increase sun sensitivity. In individuals with darker skin--who likely consider themselves more resilient to sun exposure in the first place--these medications can cause sunburn and increase the risk of skin cancer. Medications like birth control, antibiotics and acne medications typically contain chemicals that can make your dark skin even more sensitive to sunlight.
