Overview

In your twenties, the main type of skincare you need is preventative. The more you take care of you skin in your twenties, the less you will have to do as you get older. Get into a daily routine of taking care of your skin to keep it looking healthy in the years ahead. "You don't need anti-wrinkle creams or microdermabrasion in your twenties," says Ranella Hirsch, M.D., president-elect of the American Society of Cosmetic Dermatology & Aesthetic Surgery.

Avoid Sun

Stay out of the sun whenever possible. When you do expose your skin to sunshine, always wear sunscreen SPF 15 or higher. "When you have UV exposure over time, that radiation damages the skin's ability to repair itself," says Dr. Greg Branham, M.D., F.A.C.S., director of facial plastic surgery at Saint Louis University School of Medicine and a SLUCare physician. The more you stay out of the sun, the less damage you will have in the long run.

Don't Smoke

Smoking restricts blood vessels and can keep oxygen and nutrients from getting to the skin. This results in wrinkles, skin discoloration and loss of elasticity. (Drugs and alcohol have negative effects on the skin as well.)

Have a Daily Regimen

Wash your skin every night with a mild cleanser and apply a hydrating liquid or an oil-free moisturizer. Never go to sleep with makeup on, because it can clog your pores or cause skin irritation.

Apply moisturizer containing SPF 15 or higher with UVB and UVA protection daily, smoothing it into your face, neck and chest. These areas are usually the most exposed on a daily basis, no matter what season.

Apply Vitamin A-derivative Retinoids

Every night, apply a cream containing vitamin A-derivative retinoids, such as Retin-A, Tazorac or Avage. Retinoids can treat sun-damaged skin by increasing the rate of normal cell division in the top layer of the skin, causing it to look thicker and fuller. Retinoids also stimulate synthesis in collagen (which makes up the second layer of skin), thus delaying the onset of wrinkles.

Retin-A, Tazorac, or Avage are all prescription-strength creams and cannot be purchased over the counter. If you are unable to obtain these prescription creams, try less potent over-the-counter retinol products.

Eat a Healthy Diet and Get Plenty of Rest

Take notice of what you are putting in your mouth. If you constantly consume large amounts of fat, sugar, salt or caffeine, this is what your skin will reflect. Drink plenty of water and eat plenty of vegetables, which contain many vitamins and nutrients that are extremely important for radiant skin. Also, try for seven or more hours of sleep per night. Being well rested will definitely minimize bags and dark circles under the eyes, as well as leave you refreshed for the next day.
