No matter your age, proper skin care will help you battle the skin woes that plague you. It will also help your skin look healthier and prevent premature signs of aging. Multiple factors can affect the type of skin problems you may have, such as age, diet, environment and stress level. You should develop a skin care routine specifically for your skin type, and select products designed to help you with your particular skin concerns. Always talk to your doctor before you begin using new products.

Step 1

Wash your skin twice a day with a cleanser designed for your skin type. For dry skin, use a moisturizing cleanser that will not strip skin of oil, which can make it flaky or itchy. If you have sensitive skin, use a gentle cleanser to avoid redness or irritation. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, choose an oil-free cleanser that will also fight breakouts. "Cosmopolitan" magazine suggests Noxzema Clean Blemish Control Foaming Face Wash, which promises to gently cleanse your skin and control acne with salicylic acid.

Step 2

Apply a thin layer of acne cream to any blemishes or areas of your skin that are prone to breakouts. Select a product that contains either benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid; these will help treat existing acne and prevent future breakouts. "Cosmopolitan" suggests Aveeno Clear Complexion Correcting Treatment. If you do not have acne, skip this step.

Step 3

Apply a moisturizer during the day that contains sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher, as well as antioxidants. This will hydrate your skin and protect it from the damaging effects of UV rays and the environment. Select an oil-free formula if your skin is greasy or if you experience breakouts. Use a moisturizer that contains a soothing botanical like chamomile if your skin is sensitive and prone to redness or irritation. Dermatologist Howard Sobel recommends Eucerin Q10 Anti-Wrinkle Sensitive Skin Lotion SPF 15, which promises to be gentle and safe for both dry and sensitive skin.

Step 4

Wash your face before bed and apply a nighttime moisturizer containing alpha-hydroxy acids or retinol, particularly if you want to ward off wrinkles and other signs of aging. These creams encourage collagen production and skin cell renewal, which rids your skin of dead cells and helps it look healthier and brighter. "Allure" magazine suggests Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Cream, which promises to make your skin softer and more refined, while reducing fine lines and wrinkles.
