Ingredients in Aveeno Lotion

Aveeno produces a number of different lotions that vary from everyday moisturizer to intense moisturizing lotion for severely dry skin. Its lotions come both with fragrance and also fragrance free for those who are sensitive to scent or prefer another fragrance. Some lotions from Aveeno are chemically formulated to last for 24 hours, while others penetrate your skin but need reapplication if your skin begins to feel dry. While most Aveeno lotions come in a container with a pump, some lotions are available packaged in a tub. The ingredients vary among the different lotion types, but the core ingredients are the same.

Dimethicone

Several Aveeno lotions include dimethicone. Dimethicone is an anti-foaming ingredient as well as a skin protectant and emollient. However, the Environmental Working Group, a group devoted to reviewing the ingredients in beauty products, notes that dimethicone may be linked to organ toxicity and may be an environmental toxin.

Oxybenzone

Aveeno's lotions that include a sun protection factor, or SPF, use oxybenzone. Oxybenzone absorbs ultraviolet light and is a common ingredient in sun protection. While the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel approves of its use in products, the EWG disagrees. The EWG notes that as of 2010, oxybenzone has a "high hazard" rating of 9 out of 10. Oxybenzone may be linked to the development of photoallergenic response as well as disruption of the endocrine system in people. In addition, though it is not a reproductive toxin, its use builds up the amount of the compound in your system.

Benzyl Alcohol

Benzyl alcohol is Generally Recognized as Safe, or GRAS, by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Its use varies from acting as a preservative to part of a fragrance. The EWG notes that benzyl alcohol may be linked to neurotoxicity in people. The ingredient may also trigger an allergic response in some people. In animal studies, benzyl alcohol has been linked to mutations. However, these studies use high doses of benzyl alcohol, not the low concentrations found in Aveeno lotion.

Other Ingredients

Aveeno commonly uses other ingredients in its lotions. Many of these are noted by both the EWG and CosmeticsInfo.org as being harmless. Water and sodium chloride have no harmful effects. In addition, Aveeno lotions often include colloidal oatmeal, which is thought to stop the itching associated with severely dry skin. Oat oil, extract and flour have no negative effects noted by either the EWG or CosmeticsInfo.org. In fact, the Mayo Clinic notes that this type of oatmeal may help manage flare ups of atopic dermatitis.
