Overview

Dry hair breaks easily and lacks luster, and it can look frizzy. Sometimes dry hair is a sign of poor hair care. The foods you eat affect the condition of your hair as well. According to the author of "Linda Page's Healthy Healing," "Nutrition is the real secret to healthy hair." If you want to prevent dry hair and have hair that is shiny and healthy looking, try to reach your goal by making a few simple lifestyle changes.

Step 1

Supply your hair with healthy vitamins and minerals by eating foods that enhance the condition of your hair. Consume fruits such as apples, bananas, cantaloupe and mangoes. Also eat vegetables such as carrots, onions, pumpkin and spinach. These foods contain vitamin A, which is good for hair health. Include zinc in your diet. Foods that contain zinc include turkey, pork, fish, soybeans, pumpkin seeds and squash seeds.

Step 2

Use hair care products that will not dry your hair, and avoid hair sprays that contain alcohol. When you swim in chlorinated pools, protect your hair from the chlorine by wearing a bathing cap. Let your hair dry naturally after washing it, as blow dryers have a tendency to dry hair out. If you want to style your hair, instead of curling it with heating devices such as curling irons that cause hair dryness, curl your hair with rollers and hairpins. Do not use hair perming products or other products that contain harsh chemicals.

Step 3

Avoid exposing your hair to the sun for long periods of time. The sun can dry your hair and damage it. To shield your hair from the sun's damaging rays, tuck your hair under a hat or a scarf when you are outdoors.

Step 4

Condition your hair with a conditioner designed for your hair type after washing it. Leave the conditioner in your hair for the time recommended by the manufacturer before thoroughly rinsing it out. Deep-condition your hair with olive oil about once a month. Wet your hair with the oil and massage it into your scalp. Leave the olive oil in your hair for approximately 10 minutes, and then thoroughly rinse it out with warm water and shampoo.
