What Are the Benefits of Organic Skin Care?

What Are the Benefits of Organic Skin Care? What Are the Benefits of Organic Skin Care?

The skin is the largest organ of the body, so skin care plays an important role in overall health. Just as organic foods and cleaning products are gaining in popularity, health-conscious consumers are turning to an expanding array of organic skin care products to deliver a smooth, glowing and healthy complexion.

Avoid Harmful Chemicals

Most common non-organic skin care and body products contain harmful ingredients such as mercury, nitrosamines and polyethylene glycol, according to the Global Health Center, a health information resource created by Dr. Edward Group, a nutritionist and chiropractor. According to Dr. Group, these chemicals are easily absorbed through the skin, spreading through the body and potentially harming body organs. Natural and organic skin care lines avoid the most harmful chemical ingredients found in other products; however, Dr. Group advises, it is important to read labels carefully. Government labeling regulations are not as stringent for cosmetics as they are for food, so to reap the benefits of non-chemical organic skin care product ingredients, read the labels carefully and don't rely on designations like "all natural."

Ingredients that Work

Skin care products that are labeled 100% certified organic by the U.S. Department of Agriculture contain only ingredients that meet the USDA's organic food standards. These ingredients are not only free from harmful chemicals, but they fulfill the same purposes as synthetic ingredients, working to create smooth, glowing skin. Emollients provide a moisture barrier that keeps skin moist. According to the Northwestern Health Sciences University, synthetic emollients are made using fossil fuels and carcinogenic catalysts, while organic emollients like seed and fruit oils are cold-pressed, and contain nutrients essential to human health. Surfectants are cleaning agents like soap; Northwestern Health Sciences University says that synthetic soaps are made from slaughterhouse tarrow and chemical foaming agents, while the effective surfectants of organic soaps are made from plant saponins found in vegetable oils. These natural ingredients have been used in human skin care products for hundreds of years, and they work effectively.

Wrinkle Relief

Organic skin care products can tame wrinkles, without synthetic chemicals. Aloe vera gel and extracts have long been a traditional treatment for kitchen burns and sunburns. The University of Mississippi reports that an organic extract of aloe vera called Alasta, discovered by the University of Mississippi's National Center for Natural Product Research, improves skin elasticity and firmness, reducing wrinkles by enhancing the skin's natural immune system. The extract is featured in skin care products from Sustainable Youth. Wrinkle-fighting aloe vera is also found in skin care creams and aloe gels and juices such as the USDA certified organic products from SSSBiotic.
