Organic Skin Care Tips

The Environmental Working Group has published updates on what ingredients in many mainstream skincare products may be irritating or have more serious effects. Another choice for routine skincare is to use organic products that are designed for sensitive skin; do a skin patch test on all new products by dabbing a very small amount on one inner elbow and cover with a bandage for 24 hours. If you have any skin irritation, cleanse the area and discontinue use. An even simpler option is to care for your skin with items from the pantry.

Jojoba Oil and Castile Soap

Common skin irritants include skincare products made with parabens, which can disrupt the endocrine system or those containing oxybenzone, linked to increased risk for cancer, according to the EWG. Instead, consider organic skin cleansers such as jojoba oil and liquid castille soap made without added fragrances or artificial colors. Jojoba oil is a good makeup remover dabbed on cotton balls, and castile soap is widely available. It is highly concentrated and is best used very diluted with water.

Coconut and Sunflower Oil

Organic facial scrubs and cleansers are low-risk for toxicity if they are made from organic oils and organic essential oils, according to the EWG. A commercial skincare facial scrub made from sugar, sunflower seed oil, coconut oil, vitamin E oil and rosemary essential oil was rated at an overall level zero for toxicity or any cancer risk. While EWG has a database of commercial products to search for safety, you could mix up your own cleanser at home using the same organic ingredients.

Apple Cider Vinger

Oily skin might mean you reach for an astringent in the form of disposable facial pads, but the EWG notes that salicylic acid, the active ingredient in some facial pads, can cause organ toxicity. Instead, consider using organic apple cider vinegar or lemon juice diluted in water as a facial cleanser. Rinse thoroughly before you moisturize as usual.
