Remedies to Lighten Skin

If you are looking for natural skin-lightening treatments, minus the harsh ingredients found in many over-the-counter skin care products, you're in luck. Most of the ingredients you need for natural remedies to lighten skin are kitchen staples. Short-term dark spots, such as uneven application of self-tanners, may immediately disappear after one application of a natural remedy, while other dark spots such as freckles and sun damage may need a long-term commitment using natural remedies, and some dark spots may not disappear. Make the recipe at home and use the remedies regularly, then show off the results to a friend.

Lemon Scrub

Over time, the upper layers of the skin collect dead, pigmented skin cells that stick together and form dark spots such as freckles, moles or age spots. To remedy the collection of old, dark skin cells, you need a face and body scrub. Lemons have natural bleaching properties and are safe enough to use on most skin types. Lemon scrub is loaded with citric acid and vitamins A and P. Although not classified as a vitamin per se, vitamin P is the term given to bioflavonoids, which are antioxidant properties found in citrus fruits and some vegetables that help the body absorb vitamin C better and fight off free radicals, toxins damaging to cell function and renewal. For dry, mature skin types, prepare a lemon scrub by combining 1 cup of brown sugar, 2 Tbsp. of fresh lemon juice, and ¼ cup of olive oil in a jar. Stir and apply to face and body two to three times a week, using as much as you need for each application, about ¼ of the mix. You can always prepare more if needed. For oily or combination skin types, combine 1 cup of sea salt, 3 Tbsp. of fresh lemon juice and ¼ cup of grape seed oil in a jar. Apply to your face and body for up to two minutes and rinse thoroughly. Use three times a week.

You can leave a mask on longer than other types of applications, improving your chances of removing stubborn dark spots. A skin-lightening mask evens out skin tone and works like a glycolic peel, without the side effects or risks associated with professional-strength peels. Prepare a mask by combining 1/8 tsp. of turmeric powder, 1 tsp. of lemon juice and 2 Tbsp. of yogurt. Using your fingertips, apply half of the remedy to your face and neck in an upward motion. Apply the remaining mask to the décolletage, from your shoulders to the bottom of your breasts. Prepare another mix for use on your back. Use a lotion applicator when applying to your back and other hard-to-reach areas, avoiding contact with mucous membranes. Leave the mask on for 30 minutes, rinse with cool water and pat your skin dry.

Cold Cream

Cold cream can remove makeup and dirt from your face and neck, and you can wear cold cream as a moisturizer too. Lactic acid, an ingredient used in many brand-name skin care products, is a component found in dairy products that gently exfoliates dark, dead skin cells. Prepare a cold cream by combining 2 Tbsp. of buttermilk and 1 cup of sour cream in a small container and stir. Apply to your face and neck, leave on for two minutes and remove only the excess with a tissue. If you are removing makeup, wipe all of the cream off with a tissue, removing all traces of makeup and dirt, and reapply the cream. Wipe off only excess with a tissue, so the residue remains and the ingredients can work over time.

You may experience rough, dry patches on your skin after using natural or synthetic treatments, so you need a pH balanced and normalizing toner. Pour into a spray bottle the juice of one lemon, 1/8 tsp. of white vinegar and ½ cup of triple rose water. Shake the bottle well, pump three to four squirts onto a cotton ball, and apply to your face, neck, and décolletage using upward strokes. Apply once a day after you cleanse your face and before you apply moisturizer and sunblock.

Natural Sunblock

According to the National Cancer Institute, green tea contains catechins that fight free radicals and may inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Skin cancer starts with dark spots, usually in the form of moles or other dark lesions on the skin. You can protect your skin from further damage by drinking green tea and applying green tea directly to your skin. Make a cup of hot green tea, covering the top of the cup for five minutes as you brew the tea bag or green tea leaves. Drink at least one cup per day. Prepare another hot cup of green tea and apply to your skin, using a saturated cotton ball. Swipe the cotton ball on your face, neck, décolletage and hands. Use a cotton swab for applying green tea around your eye area, avoiding contact with eyes.
