Large Pores Information

Overview

Everyone wants the perfect, flawless skin. Good skin helps you appear youthful and vibrant. Large pores on your face can detract from your appearance and may make you feel self-conscious. Enlarged pores cannot be made smaller, but they can be minimized. Understanding how pores become enlarged and how to prevent further damage can help improve the appearance of your skin.

Description

Pores are simply an opening of the hair follicle on the skin surface, explains the website DermaDoctor. The hair follicle begins in the inner layers of the dermis. Each follicle has a sebaceous gland that empties into it. The sebaceous glands produce sebum, an oil that lubricates and protects the skin surface.

Pores are located wherever there is a hair, but enlarged pores typically occur on the face. People with oily or combination skin tend to have more enlarged pores than those with dry skin. Enlarged pores usually occur on the nose, forehead and chin.

Process

Clogs in the hair follicles enlarge pores, notes DermaDoctor. Dead skin cells lining the follicle may clump and plug the follicle. Sebum cannot reach the skin surface and pools behind the plug, attracting bacteria and causing inflammation. The plug consisting of dead skin cells, oil, bacteria and dirt stretches the opening of the follicle, resulting in the enlarged pore.

Causes

The excess sebum production and resulting clogged pores have several causes, notes the online guide Beauty-Advices. The most common reason for large pores is improper skin care. Incomplete removal of dirt, makeup and oils blocks pores. Genetics is another important factor, since skin type is inherited.

Sun exposure damages collagen and elastin production, making skin less resilient and unable to hold pores close and tight. Sun also causes thickened skin, which results in more skin cells collecting near pores and exaggerating the follicle openings.

Hormonal changes, such as during puberty or menopause, stimulate sebum production. Persistent acne stretches pores, and blackheads draw attention to large pores.

Other factors contributing to large pores include dehydrated skin, a poor diet that deprives skin of necessary vitamins, heavy makeup and smoking.

Treatment

Large pores cannot shrink in size, but their appearance can be minimized. Thorough skin cleansing and exfoliation is paramount, advises the website Beauty Guide. Home remedies include tightening masks made with almond meal paste, bran and grapefruit, or salt and buttermilk.

Chemical peels, laser resurfacing and dermabrasion remove surface layers of skin, reducing the appearance of large pores as well as wrinkles and lines that may further exaggerate enlarged pores, notes Beauty-Advices. Left untreated, enlarged pores can lead to acne, blackheads and, in extreme cases, skin infections.

Prevention

Cleansing twice daily, exfoliating and thoroughly removing makeup are the best preventives for large pores, reports Beauty-Advices. Use products designed for your skin type to avoid over drying your skin. Keep skin moisturized and use sunscreen if you plan to be in the sun.

Hot water can enlarge pores, so use lukewarm water when washing your face. Eat fruits and vegetables and drink plenty of water to keep skin hydrated.
