How to Minimize Large Pores
Pores are essential to keeping your skin balanced, as they secrete oil that helps to keep the skin soft and moisturized. However, the pores can become enlarged because of genetics or if they are infected or filled with too much oil. Although it is difficult to overcome a genetic predisposition, if you are experiencing larger-than-normal pores because excessive oil buildup, there are methods to minimize the pores or make them less noticeable.
Reduce the amount of oil on the face by washing it twice daily (morning and night). Face washes that contain retinol or vitamin C are ideal, as these ingredients help to encourage cell turnover. Cell turnover reduces the amount of pore-clogging oils while avoiding excessive dryness, which can actually cause the skin to increase oil production.
Exfoliate your skin regularly. Exfoliation involves using an abrasive substance, such as natural seeds or other smooth-edged particles, to reduce the amount of excess skin or oil on the face. Using an over-the-counter scrub, gently exfoliate the skin by applying the scrub and rubbing in a circular motion. Rinse off the scrub to reveal smoother, healthier-looking skin and minimized pores.
Avoid exposure to sunlight and always apply a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher to protect your skin from sun damage. This damage can cause the cells around your pores to become thicker and appear larger.
Utilize a daily astringent, a liquid that contains witch hazel or another active ingredient. Apply an astringent to a cotton ball, then lightly wipe the face. Not only does this action leave the skin feeling refreshed, but it also helps to rid the skin of excess oil and residue.
Make it a habit to remove your makeup before going to bed as part of your daily face washing procedure. Using lukewarm (not hot) water, wet the face, then apply a cleanser using a gentle circular motion. Don't neglect the sides of the face on either side of the eyes or your forehead up to the hairline. Rinse thoroughly, then gently towel dry. If you fail to remove your makeup, the pores absorb the oils on the skin and can enlarge further. By allowing the skin to "breathe" and be makeup-free, the pores are better able to regulate themselves.
