How Do I Minimize Large Facial Pores?
Pores are small openings in the skin that allow the release of oil and sweat. Beauty magazines featuring models with smooth, flawless facial skin started a surge of interest in pore size reduction. Large facial pores are usually due to genetics or highly active oil glands--both issues completely out of your control. There is no way to alter the size of your pores permanently, but you can minimize your pores temporarily to make them appear smaller for a smoother facial appearance.
Try an over-the-counter (OTC) product. Pore-refining masks, lotions and cleansers on the beauty market minimize the appearance of pores temporarily. Keep in mind that you have to use these products daily for several weeks before they make a difference.
Get a prescription for a topical treatment from your physician. Prescription topical treatments include tretinoin and tazarotene. These medicines minimize pores by preventing dead skin cells from building up inside the holes.
Go for a peel. Glycolic peels and trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels remove dead skin, making pores appear smaller. Dermatologists perform peels in-office or at out-patient surgery centers, depending on the strength of the peel. Some spas offer peel services for clients by trained and licensed professionals.
Ask about laser treatments. Intense pulsed light (IPL) or photorejuvenation, as well as fractionated laser technology, resurfaces facial skin, removing dead skin cells. The resurfacing process reduces pore size for several months. Laser therapy is available through your dermatologist.
Discuss oral prescriptions with your dermatologist. Isotretinoin is an extreme solution to large pores, but it works only to reduce the size of pores for several months.
