Apexicon E is the brand name for a topical corticosteroid product containing 0.05 percent diflorasone diacetate. Manufactured by PharmaDerm, this cream is available by prescription only, as it is one of the stronger corticosteroids on the market. Doctors prescribe Apexicon E for treating for itchy and inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and dermatitis. The medicine is primarily prescribed for skin problems that do not respond to other medications.

Corticosteroid medicines are derivatives of natural hormones produced by the adrenal glands. They are different from anabolic steroids, which promote muscle growth and strength. Corticosteroid hormones have many important functions, explains NetDoctor, one of which is control of inflammatory responses. Although topical corticosteroids do not cure skin conditions, they can relieve symptoms of skin inflammation. This inflammation may be caused by irritants, typically the case with dermatitis and eczema, or by autoimmune activity, as in psoriasis.

The steroid in Apexicon E cream, diflorasone diacetate, is a potent medicine that can relieve a variety of stubborn and chronic skin symptoms, as noted by MedlinePlus. It is effective for treating itching, inflammation, swelling, dryness, scaling, crusting, and other discomfort involved with skin disorders.

To use Apexicon E cream, first wash or soak the affected area thoroughly, unless this causes skin irritation, advises MedlinePlus. Then apply a thin film of the cream and rub it in gently. Apply it to the affected areas one to three times daily, depending on the severity of the problem. Normally, you should not cover Apexicon E with any dressings or bandages because this increases the effects, but your doctor may recommend this for managing psoriasis or stubborn skin conditions. For a young child, do not put tight-fitting diapers or plastic pants over the Apexicon E cream.

Side Effects

Like other topical corticosteroids, Apexicon E cream can cause numerous side effects, particularly if you apply too much or use it for a prolonged time. Possible side effects as listed by include pimples, blisters, burning sensations, skin lightening and skin thinning with easy bruising. Some people may experience the same effects Apexicon E is designed to relieve, such as redness, dryness, flaking, crusting and irritation.

Using too much of this medicine or using it for a long time may increase your risk of having adrenal gland problems, as the drug can be absorbed into the body. The risk is higher for children and for people applying large amounts for a long time. Symptoms could include blurred vision, dizziness, fainting, increased thirst, increased urination, unusual tiredness, weakness, and a rapid, pounding or irregular heartbeat. These symptoms call for immediate medical attention. To avoid absorption, do not apply more than directed, and do not apply Apexicon E cream to broken or burned skin.
