It always hurts so good to scratch an itch. Most causes of red, itchy spots are mild in nature. Some red, itchy sports are the first signs of a more serous reaction. Any redness and itching accompanied with a shortness of breath, swelling of the tongue and throat or a rapid drop in blood pressure are signs of an anaphylactic allergic reaction and require urgent medical help.

Drug Allergies

Penicillin is one of the more common drug allergies, according to Most of the drug allergy interactions are not true allergies in which the body goes into anaphylactic shock. These types of allergies include a red, itchy rash on the trunk area of the body.

An allergy to one type of penicillin may also indicate an allergy to other types of penicillin. This type of allergy can also develop over time. A rash that develops soon after taking medication is an indication of an allergy and requires contacting the prescribing doctor immediately.

Contact Dermatitis

Anything that touches the skin can cause contact dermatitis. The "Merck Manual" states that dermatitis, which is a general term that refers to a range of skin rashes, is sometimes broadly called eczema. Within hours or days, a red, itchy rash will develop in response to contact with the irritant. These rashes can also develop over time as well.

The "Merck Manual" states there are two main types of contact dermatitis; the first is irritant contact dermatitis from coming into contact with irritants such as nail polish remover, drain cleaner or other harsh chemicals. Allergic contact dermatitis is from coming into direct contact with a substance that causes an immune response. These items include poison oak, latex and nickel in jewelery. In addition to red, itchy spots, there will also be red, irritated blisters.

Insect Bites

Ants, fleas, mites and mosquitoes all bite to defend an area or get food. These bites can cause irritation and itching of the skin. Most bites start off as just a raised area of skin that then turns into pink or red, itchy bumps. The zone of itching varies from person to person. If staying or working in an area where there is a large insect population, multiple bites can happen in a short period of time.

The National Institutes of Health warn that mosquitoes can also carry diseases like the West Nile virus or malaria. Developing symptoms like headache or fever shortly after mosquito bites in an endemic area may require further investigation at a medical clinic. The best defense against bug bites is for individuals to avoid infested areas, wear long clothing and use insect repellent.
