A healthy diet is vital for maintaining healthy hair and skin. If you don't always eat as well as you should, taking supplements for healthy skin and hair can certainly help improve the condition of both, but exercise caution. Certain supplements can have the opposite effect. For instance, vitamin A and selenium taken in excess can cause hair loss rather than growth. Also, some supplements are not meant for long-term use. If you're concerned about your hair or skin, consult with a dermatologist prior to taking supplements.

Silica

Silica is a mineral that helps provide elasticity to the skin and nourish the hair and nails. Only a small amount of silica is necessary, and it should not be taken on a regular basis. According to Vital Health Zone, silica helps the body generate collagen, a protein used in many hair and skin products. Collagen protects the skin and improves its appearance. Silica has the added advantage of strengthening bones and cartilage and maintaining arterial health.

Gotu Kola

Gotu kola is an herb that has been used for thousands of years in Asia. Gotu kola contains triterpenoids, a chemical compound found in plants. Triterpenoids can help heal wounds and strengthen skin and hair. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, in India and China, gotu kola has been used to treat psoriasis and leprosy and also to reduce the appearance of stretch marks during pregnancy. Gotu kola is also known as Indian pennywort, white rot and hydrocotyle.

Evening Primrose Oil

Evening primrose oil is filled with an essential fatty acid, gamma linolenic acid, or GLA. In her book, "Evening Primrose Oil," Nancy Morse writes that native Americans first used evening primrose oil to provide relief from arthritis pain and also to soothe skin ailments. Herbalists use the supplement to treat eczema and other skin conditions. Evening oil should not be used by pregnant women due to possible pregnancy complications, according to Sloan-Kettering Hospital.
