Neutrogena Healthy Skin Face Lotion Ingredients
Healthy Skin Face Lotion is a skin cream manufactured by Neutrogena. Like most personal care products, this lotion contains purified water and fragrance, along with 19 other ingredients. It uses vitamins to help skin appear softer and smoother, and does not contain any harsh chemicals.
There are two active ingredients in Healthy Skin Face Lotion. It combines a 5 percent solution of oxybenzone and a 7.5 percent solution of octinoxate. Both are used in many sunscreens and are organic.
Antioxidants are agents that fight free radicals and the damage they can do to skin. Ascorbic acid polypeptide and tocopheryl acetate are two antioxidants in this lotion. Ascorbic acid polypeptide is vitamin C, and tocopherol acetate is vitamin E. Vitamin E can also prevent sun damage from UV rays.
Humectants and Hydrators
Humectants provide hydration and give the lotion the ability to hold water in the skin to prevent it from drying out. Glycerin, glycolic acid and panthenol are three ingredients in this category. Panthenol, a non-irritating form of vitamin B5, may promote skin healing.
Thickeners are additives that bulk up a formula and make it more cream-like and less watery. Thickening agents in this lotion are xanthan gum, PEG-100 stearate, C12-15 alkyl benzoate and glyceryl stearate. PEG compounds like PEG-100 stearate also work as binders and surfactants, and help compounds glide more smoothly over the skin.
Preservatives keep a compound fresher longer and without mold, fungi and bacteria. There are three preservatives in this lotion: methylparaben, propylparaben and diazolidinyl urea. The parabens are less likely to irritate the skin, as diazolidinyl urea releases formaldehyde, according to the journal "Contact Dermatitis."
There are seven other ingredients in Neutrogena Healthy Skin Face Lotion. Bisabolol is an anti-irritant derived from chamomile. Cetearyl alcohol works like an emulsifier. Dicaprylyl maleate is a synthetic that works like lubricant. Retinyl palmitate, or vitamin A palmitate, smooths out wrinkles. Sodium glycolate is a pH adjuster, while stearic acid is an essential fatty acid. Lastly, tetrasodium EDTA is a chelating agent that keeps minerals from binding together.
