How to Get Rid of Dry Skin Naturally
According to the Mayo Clinic, dry skin is usually caused by environmental conditions, genetics or excessive bathing. Dry skin can occur anywhere on your body but is usually most common on the feet, hands, arms and lower legs. You may experience flakiness, redness, peeling, itching or have a tight feeling. Luckily, unless your skin is severely dry, you can generally treat this condition on your own using natural home remedies.
Use warm water when you bathe or shower. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, dry skin is most commonly caused by bathing in water that is too hot. Frequent exposure to hot water strips your skin of its natural moisture and oils, resulting in a flaky, chaffed appearance.
Moisturize your skin with baby oil directly after bathing. Baby oil is scented mineral oil - a gentle, natural moisturizer. Dry your skin gently using a soft, absorbent towel. Apply a layer of baby oil to your body when it's still damp to help seal in moisture.
Cut off a small piece from an aloe vera plant. Gently squeeze the gel along the leaf and apply the gel directly to parts of your body that are particularly dry. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, aloe contains certain compounds that soothe and help speed the healing process. Aloe may also reduce inflammation associated with certain types of itchy dry skin.
Take an oatmeal bath. Oatmeal can help to heal and soothe dry, itching or irritated skin. Put one cup of regular, store-bought oatmeal in a blender and grind until you get a soft, powder-like consistency. Pour the powder under the faucet while you fill up the bath. This will help it to dissolve more thoroughly. Be sure to rinse yourself under the shower afterwards to wash away any residue.
Drink plenty of water. You should aim to drink at least two liters per day. Water flushes toxins from your system and carries nutrients to your cells. This helps to prevent dry skin by keeping your skin nourished and hydrated.
Apply petroleum jelly nightly to dry hands and feet. Coat your hands and feet with a layer of petroleum jelly. Cover them with cotton gloves and socks to promote absorption and prevent the jelly from rubbing off on your sheets. Do this routine every evening for supple and moist skin in the morning.
