Moisturizer for Dry, Flaky Skin
Winter weather can cause dry, flaky skin. You may find that you have isolated areas on your body that are dry and flaky, or that you have generally dry, flaky skin. Skin is your body's largest organ and protects you from environmental elements. It is important to treat it right and address the skin's specific needs, such as the need for hydration and moisture. Well-moisturized skin will feel softer and smoother and become more resilient to sun, weather and aging.
Lanolin, the natural oil that comes from wool, is a humectant. A humectant absorbs moisture and/or helps contain moisture. So skin lotions and creams that contain lanolin help moisturize the skin and keep the moisture in. Hair products with lanolin help treat dry, flaky skin on your scalp, as reported by the National Institutes of Health. You can use lanolin oil directly on your skin, or look for moisturizers that use lanolin as a main ingredient.
According to researchers at Vanderbilt University, antioxidants help treat dry, flaky skin as well as aging skin. Look for antioxidants as a leading ingredient in products or include antioxidant rich foods in your diet. Antioxidants are found in vitamins A, C and E. Antioxidants moisturize dry skin as well as help repair skin damage and protect the skin from free radicals. Use skin creams and lotions that list either antioxidants or vitamins A, C, and E.
Read the labels on skin moisturizing products. Oils, lotions and creams that contain olive, eucalyptus or lavender oil can also moisturize your dry skin. Oatmeal is a soothing ingredient to treat flaky, dry skin. Additional key ingredients used to treat extra dry skin include extracts from rose, lavender, aloe vera and chamomile. Each of these ingredients provides natural resources for healing your dry, flaky skin.
Oils and Ointments
You don't have to limit your skin moisturizing choice to a lotion. Dr. Moses of Familydoctor.org reports that oils and ointments for dry, flaky skin are more effective than lotions or creams. Apply them at least three times a day and right after you bathe. Applying oils after bathing will hold in the moisture from the water. For sensitive skin, choose hypoallergenic products to protect against possible allergic reactions.
Always consider improving your diet to treat dry, flaky skin. Add antioxidants
to treat your skin from the inside out. Stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of water as well. If you have very dry hands, put petroleum jelly on them before you go to bed at night, and sleep with your hands in cotton-lined gloves.
