How to Treat Dry Flaky Skin

Dry skin is caused by a minimized amount of moisture in the skin. Dry skin can be caused by--just to name a few--extreme hot or cold environments, dehydration, moving from an area with high humidity to a location with low humidity, or chemotherapy. Arms and legs are usually affected the most by dry skin. Dry skin can affect the entire body, but oils produced in the armpits, groin and central face help to protect these areas.

Step 1

Change your bathing habits. Do not take hot showers if you are having problems with dry skin. The heat will dry the skin out even more. Shower less frequently and reduce the shower temperature to warm, even in the winter. Once out of the shower, only pat your skin dry. Do not fully remove the water from your skin. Use a moisturizer immediately to trap some of the water on your skin.

Step 2

Moisturize your skin often. Look for moisturizers that are oil-based. Ointments have a tendency to have higher oil content--about 80 percent--than lotions.

Step 3

Wear multiple layers of clothes that are loose fitting during the cold months. This allows for good air flow through the garments, but protects your body from the sun or dry, cold air. During summer months wear enough clothing to cover the areas of your body that are prone to dry skin. Avoiding direct sunlight is a must in the battle to keep your skin moisturized.

Step 4

Drink plenty of fluids. The more water you drink, the more hydrated your skin becomes.

Step 5

Avoid perfumes and colognes on the affected area. The chemicals within these fragrances can cause the skin to dehydrate, and therefore irritate the skin even further.

Step 6

Use a humidifier in your home to add extra moisture into the air. This applies to the winter as well the summer. The heater in your home can cause the internal atmosphere to become dry.
