How to Fade Dark Spots Naturally

Overview

Dark spots form when your skin produces excess of melanin in a specific area. According to MayoClinic.com, this is mostly caused by long-term exposure to the sun, although hormonal changes and aging also affect your skin. Known as photoaging, this process is usually treated by your doctor with treinoin (Retin-A) prescription cream, laser or dermabrasion. These forms of treatment are expensive, though. They can also leave your skin irritated and inflamed. Before you commit to something invasive, you might want try a home remedy.

Step 1

Make your own exfoliant. Natural Health magazine recommends mixing half a teaspoon of vinegar and lemon juice, one teaspoon horseradish root and a few drops of rosemary essential oil. Mix well and then apply to the spots twice a day. This will lighten the spots over time but also might irritate skin.

Step 2

Apply some natural lemon juice over the spots. You can rub a lemon directly on the skin or use a cotton ball to dab the juice on the spots. Leave on the skin overnight and wash your face in the morning, unless your skin is getting irritated. In that case, wash the juice off before going to bed.

Step 3

Mix two teaspoons each of apple cider vinegar and onion juice. Dab over the dark spots twice a day until the spots lighten. Stop using if you experience irritation or skin sensitivity. You can also try the vinegar on its own if you don't want the smell of onion on your skin.
