Avelox is a prescription antibiotic that contains the active ingredient moxifloxacin. Moxifloacin is a fluoroquinolone that works by destroying bacterial pathogens in the body. A doctor may prescribe this medication to patients who have certain bacterial infections of the skin, abdomen, sinuses or lungs. Patients should discuss the limited contraindications of Avelox with a medical professional before beginning treatment with this antibiotic.

Allergy to Moxifloxacin

A patient who has an allergy to moxifloxacin or other types of quinolone medications should not take Avelox, RxList warns. Treating hypersensitive patients with Avelox can induce a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. Patients who exhibit allergic reaction symptoms such as facial swelling, hives, dizziness or severe breathing difficulties after taking Avelox should receive immediate, emergency medical care.

Under Age 18

Avelox is not approved for the treatment of patients under age 18, the National Institutes of Health publication MedlinePlus reports. This medication can cause significant joint and bone problems in children. To avoid these complications, children should not take Avelox unless otherwise instructed by a doctor.

Pregnant or Breastfeeding

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has assigned this medication to pregnancy category C, reports. As such, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take Avelox. The effects of this medication on a developing fetus or nursing infant have not been evaluated in humans. Women who become pregnant while taking Avelox should contact a doctor immediately.
