DIY Lip Exfoliator
Your lips can become dried out, chapped and scaly from exposure to the sun or cold air, from licking them frequently or from breathing through your mouth, such as when you are suffering from a stuffy nose. Dermatologist Jeffrey Benabio, M.D., F.A.A.D., states that occasionally exfoliating dry, flaky lips can leave them looking smoother and younger. There is no need to purchase an expensive exfoliator from a drug or department store. You can create your own with items you may already have.
Measure equal parts abrasive and carrier, such as 1 tsp. granulated sugar and 1 tsp. olive oil, into a small bowl or container.
Drop in a few drops of your favorite essential oil or citrus juice, which are exfoliants and antiseptics, if desired. Stir until mixed well.
Apply a small amount of the exfoliator to clean, dry lips. Scrub with your forefinger all over lips in a circular motion. The sugar will loosen and remove dry skin while the oil or honey will moisturize your lips.
Wipe away the remaining exfoliator with a damp, clean washcloth. Apply your favorite lip balm to lock in the moisture.
Store any remaining exfoliator in a lidded container in a cool, dry place for up to two weeks.
