Overview

The skin can act as a barometer for overall health. If you find yourself with dull, pasty skin, this may be an indicator that your body is missing something vital. Treating skin that lacks luster will take both external and internal measures. The key to glowing skin is following a plan for skin care and adopting healthy habits. Follow the basic rules for a healthy body to improve the look of your skin.

Step 1

Wear sunscreen whenever you go out. The Mayo Clinic recommends you apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen 30 minutes before going out and reapply every two hours if you have continuous exposure to sunlight.

Step 2

Moisturize your skin often. Pick a lotion designed for your skin type and use it frequently, as dry skin can appear dull. Moisturizing may be just the thing to liven your skin up and give you a healthy glow. After a bath or shower, blot your skin dry with a towel and apply moisturizer liberally.

Step 3

Change your diet. A poor diet affects your whole body, including the skin. Foods that are rich in antioxidants help protect and heal skin. Include carrots, apricots and other yellow and orange fruits. Eat plenty of green leafy vegetables. Avoid foods that are high in fat and carbohydrates.

Step 4

Drink plenty of water, at least eight 8-oz glasses per day.

Step 5

Add soy to your diet. "Reader's Digest" suggests that 160 mg of soy isoflavones per day may support skin health and improve the look of your skin. As an alternative, drink one glass of soy milk or use soy milk with cereal.

Step 6

Combine 4 oz of witch hazel with 1 tsp of sage and peppermint leaves, then allow them to steep for three days. Apply this compound to your skin to protect it and control oil production.

Step 7

Exfoliate your skin at least once a month. Use a facial scrub or mask to remove the outer layer of dead skin. Exposing the new skin will brighten up your face and make your skin glow. Use a sunscreen after you exfoliate to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

Step 8

Take a dietary supplement. Some studies show that increasing vitamin C helps improve your skin. Talk to your doctor and ask for a recommendation. Your doctor may want you to take a multivitamin daily. Supplements may interfere with prescription medicine. If taking medication, ask your doctor before adding a supplement to your diet.
