How to Improve Dull Skin How to Improve Dull Skin

Overview

Dull skin is a common complaint that increases with age and sun exposure. It can make you appear tired, unwell and older than you really are. In most cases, it results from improper skin care techniques, sun damage, dry skin or an accumulation of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. Sometimes, dull skin can be a sign of an underlying medical disorder that requires medical attention and treatment; check with a doctor if your dull skin does not respond to home care.

Step 1

Exfoliate every few days to remove the dead skin cells on your skin that contribute to dull skin and clogged pores. The best time to exfoliate is during or immediately after showering. Use a fine-grained product to prevent damaging your skin.

Step 2

Moisturize your skin once or twice each day within three minutes of bathing. Dry skin appears rough and dull and highlights fine lines and wrinkles. Unless your skin is very dry, a water-based lotion is probably sufficient to hydrate your skin. The American Osteopathic College of Dermatology recommends twice-daily treatment with an oil-based moisturizing cream or ointment if your skin is severely dry.

Step 3

Eat a balanced diet that contains plenty of fruits and vegetables. The MayoClinic.com explains that the antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables are beneficial to the appearance and health of your skin and will help protect it from environmental damage. Supplementing with vitamins A, C and E may also improve your skin's health.

Step 4

Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day to prevent sun damage, wrinkling, and dullness. The sun's damaging UV rays peak between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., so try to schedule indoor activities during these hours.

Step 5

Try dermabrasion or a chemical peel if your skin remains dull even after home exfoliation and lifestyle changes. These two procedures can improve your appearance by removing the top layer of your skin. This enables healthier, smoother, more radiant skin to grow in its place. Dermabrasion and chemical peels are performed on an outpatient basis.
