Dry skin manifests for a number of reasons, and age is one of them. Skin that lacks moisture does not feel smooth when you run your hand over it, and it may feel as though it has scales. According to the National Institute on Aging, older people usually find that a dry skin problem frequently appears on the lower portion of their legs, on their elbows and on the lower portion of their arms. You can restore dry skin so it will appear more youthful looking in a few easy steps.

Step 1

Invest in a loofah and use it to slough off scaly dead skin cells. Wet it with warm water and pour a moisturizing body shampoo on it, then gently brush your skin with it in the direction of the heart, passing over each area of skin only once so you do not bruise the skin. Do not brush the skin on your face. Rinse your skin well, and then apply a moisturizing cream made for dry skin while your skin is still damp. Slough off the dead skin on your face with an exfoliating product made for use on the face. Follow the directions given by the product manufacturer. After exfoliating, moisturize your skin with a facial moisturizer made for dry skin.

Step 2

Have a facial every two weeks. The steam used in the facial treatment will add moisture to your skin, and according to Joel Gerson, author of “Milady’s Standard Textbook for Professional Estheticians,” facial massage helps stimulate the oil glands and encourages them to produce more moisturizing oils. The skin’s natural oils are better for the skin than thick creams, but moisturizing creams and lotions should be used to help alleviate a dry skin problem.

Step 3

Keep a humidifier running in your room to put moisture in the room and in your skin. Rejuvenate your dry skin by bathing less and by washing your skin with a moisturizing soap. Help restore dry skin to a normal condition by staying out of the sun. Improve a dry skin condition by drinking water throughout the day. Also avoid consuming skin-drying foods that contain caffeine.
