Dry Skin Tips for Winter
Winter weather can be brutal to your skin. The cold, dry air may cause dry facial skin and chapped hands. In addition to the harsh weather outdoor, the indoor heating can make your body feel dry and itchy. Take extra care during winter months to keep your skin soft and supple.
Regularly moisturize your skin during the winter months to prevent dry skin problems. Moisturize after every bath or shower with a lotion that holds moisture in your skin. Use products that contain petroleum or glycerin for extra protection during the winter, especially for your hands and feet.
Use a humidifier in your home during the winter months to add moisture to the air and benefit your skin. Both cool mist and warm mist humidifiers add moisture to the air, but there are pros and cons to both kinds. Research and personal preference will help you decide which kind is right for you.
Apply a small amount of oil, such as coconut oil or baby oil, to your wet skin right after a bath or shower to add extra softening properties to your skin and lock in moisture. Add a few drops of any of these oils with a few drops of an essential oil to your bath water to provide a moisturizing retreat.
Protect the Lips
Use a lip balm before going out in cold, windy weather to prevent your lips from getting dry and chapped. Put on a lip balm that has an adequate sun-protection factor for protection from winter sun rays.
Wear gloves or mittens during the winter months to prevent your hands from becoming dry, chapped and cracked. Moisturize your hands with a little lotion before putting on your gloves and wear thin cotton gloves inside of them to hold in moisture.
Protect the Face
During the winter, all skin types need a moisturizer. Cold winter weather is especially harsh on your face, causing it to become drier and making it more susceptible to wrinkles. During the day, use a good moisturizer that has an adequate sun-protection factor, and at night, use a moisturizer that is formulated for night use, which has extra emollients.
