How to Care for Dry Skin
In most cases, dry skin is not a sign of a serious problem. It may feel and look uncomfortable, but can usually be improved with self-care methods. It is important to start a skin care regimen to cure dry skin, since leaving it untreated can increase your chances of developing fine lines and wrinkles. Speak to your doctor if you suffer from chronic and severe dry skin since this can be caused by a medical condition, such as psoriasis and thyroid disease.
Use an over-the-counter lotion to treat the dry skin. Choose versions that contain lactic acid and urea. These ingredients can lock in moisture, so that you find relief. Apply daily to clean and dry skin. Some brand examples are Pamela Hill Skin Care Hydrating Body Lotion and ULactin Dry Skin Lotion.
Take a lukewarm shower. Very hot showers strip the skin of the oils that keep it moistened. Limit the amount of time you spend bathing to 15 minutes or less.
Wash with a mild cleanser. Soaps and harsh cleansers can dry out the skin. Use a moisturizing body wash from companies like Dove and Neutrogena.
Apply a small amount of baby oil to the skin. While your skin is still wet after bathing, you can use baby oil to care for your dry skin.
Put moisture in the air. As part of caring for your dry skin, you want to ensure that you do not expose yourself to hot and dry indoor air. A humidifier can be purchased as a stand alone unit or installed as part of your heating and cooling system.
Treat any itchiness with a small amount of hydrocortisone cream. Use for only a couple of days since frequent usage can lead to skin irritation. Cool washcloths can also be applied to the skin to ease any itching and irritation from dry skin.
