Extremely Dry Skin Around the Eyes Extremely Dry Skin Around the Eyes

Overview

Dryness around the eyes is a frustrating problem. It makes wrinkles and lines more noticeable, and makes it more difficult to apply makeup. Washing or bathing too much may cause this problem; however, environmental factors can also play a role. Understanding the causes and making changes to your daily routine assist in getting extremely dry eye skin under control.

Cause

Changes in humidity levels are a common cause for developing extremely dry skin around the eyes. Low humidity levels suck the moisture out of under-eye skin, leaving it dry and flaky. Exposure to sun can also dry out under-eye skin. High levels of exposure to indoor heating or air conditioning also affects eye skin.

Treatments

Treating dry eye skin requires a moisturizing plan. Choose a thick under-eye cream and apply daily to reduce dryness. Moisturizers that contain urea or lactic acid are good options, recommends the American Academy of Dermatology. Apply moisturizer within three minutes of washing your face or showering. Close the door when taking a shower, which traps humidity and locks moisture into dry under-eye skin.

Also, avoid taking hot showers. Hot water strips delicate eye skin of natural oils, making dry skin worse. Limit showers and baths to five to 10 minutes.

Home Care

Wash the face with very little soap, recommends MedlinePlus. Choose a mild soap and avoid scrubbing delicate skin around the eyes. Avoid soaps that contain alcohol, which can irritate delicate skin. Dry the face gently after washing; avoid a rubbing motion.

Also, drink plenty of water. Your skin is the body's largest organ. Dehydration results in dry skin around the entire body, including the eyes. Drink a minimum of eight, 8 oz. glasses of water daily.

Prevention

Purchase a humidifier to use in your home. Adding more moisture to the air will minimize skin dryness, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Wearing sunscreen daily is also important for preventing dryness. Even in the winter time, your under-eyes are exposed to harmful rays that dry out delicate skin. Choose a sunscreen that contains a sun protection of 30 or higher.

Warnings

If dry eye skin becomes itchy or dryness is interfering with sleep, contact your doctor. Scratching that causes open sores around the eyes should also be evaluated by a medical professional. Avoid scratching the eyes at night by wearing gloves and keeping nails short, recommends MedlinePlus.
