Itchy, dry skin typically does not pose any serious health risks, but it can cause discomfort. According to the Mayo Clinic, most dry skin is a result of environmental factors, such as exposure to hot or cold temperatures, low humidity or excessive bathing. In most cases, you can treat dry, itchy skin using home remedies. Bath and shower oils can moisturize the skin and relieve itching, and they're easy to make at home. As a last resort, severe or chronic dry skin may require a visit to your dermatologist's office.

Lavender Bath Oil

Lavender oil, one of the most gentle essential oils, soothes itchy, dry skin and helps it retain moisture. In her book "Made Right for Your Skin Type," Shirley Gillett recommends making a lavender bath oil for dry skin by combining 30 drops lavender oil with 1 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil in a small paper cup. Do not use a plastic cup, as the essential oil may cause it to melt. After mixing the ingredients, cover the cup with plastic wrap, and allow it to sit for about 30 minutes before taking a bath. To use, pour the entire mixture into a bathtub filled with warm water, and soak for 15 to 20 minutes. Rub the oil into your skin during the bath for best results.

Coconut Shower Oil

Coconut oil, often used in commercial skin care products, moisturizes and nourishes itchy, dry skin. Mary G. Enig, author of "Eat Fat, Lose Fat," suggests using coconut oil to make a shower oil for dry skin. Melt 2 oz. virgin coconut oil in a small saucepan over low heat. Remove from heat, add 15 to 20 drops of lavender, geranium or jasmine essential oil, and stir to combine. Transfer the mixture immediately into a small storage jar with a lid, and allow it to harden for about two hours. To use, scoop out the solid oil mixture, and apply to dry skin in the shower. This recipe also doubles as a dry skin moisturizing cream.

Turkey Red Oil

Turkey red oil, a specially treated castor oil, dissolves in water. Most other oils simply float to the surface. This makes turkey red especially useful as a bath oil for itchy, dry skin. In her book "The Complete Book of Herbs and Spices," Sarah Garland recommends combining four parts turkey red oil with one part essential oil and transferring to a glass bottle for storage when not in use. For best results, use essential oils formulated for dry skin, such as lavender, jasmine, geranium, cedarwood or neroli. Add 1 to 2 tbsp. of the oil to a bathtub filled with warm water, and soak for 15 to 20 minutes.

Bath or Shower Oil

Combining an oil that would normally float to the surface with liquid soap and vegetable glycerin creates an oil mixture that disperses throughout the bath water, explains Janice Cox in her book "Natural Beauty for All Seasons." For dry, itchy skin, combine 1 cup almond, sesame or canola oil with 1/2 cup each vegetable glycerin and liquid soap, and transfer to a clean storage bottle. Because this oil mixture creates a light lather, it is suitable for use in the bath or shower. If using in the shower, pour about 1/4 cup of the mixture onto a sponge, and use like any other shower gel or body wash. If using in the bath, add about 1/4 cup of the mixture to the bathtub under running water.
