Dry skin is caused by a lack of water in the outer layer of skin known as the stratum corneum, notes the University of Iowa. When the skin is properly hydrated, it works to retain natural skin oils, which keep the skin soft and supple. Any number of factors can cause the skin to become dehydrated. Treating dry skin on the hands can be difficult due to their constant contact with water, soaps and other chemicals.

Coat Hands Frequently

Dry hands can be treated by frequently applying a protective layer of petrolatum, glycerin or lanolin, notes Virginia Tech University. Apply these products after washing hands, while they are still damp, to help lock moisture into the skin. These products are thick and heavy and remain on the skin for long periods of time. Lotions and body oils are less effective due to their thinness and inability to thoroughly penetrate the skin.

Avoid Irritants

Certain factors lead to an increased risk of developing dry hands. These should be avoided in order to allow skin to heal and regain moisture. According to the University of Iowa, avoid submersing hands in hot water; use warm water instead. Hot water is very drying to the skin, causing further damage. Harsh soaps and chemicals should be avoided. Use mild soaps and cleansers, and wear protective gloves when using cleaners or other harsh products.

Exfoliate

Dead skin cells should be removed from the hands frequently, allowing moisturizing products to penetrate the different layers of the skin. This product is known as exfoliation. There are several ways to accomplish exfoliation. WomenFitness.net offers a few at-home solutions. Mixing 2 tbsp. of sugar with 1 tbsp. of any oil and then rubbing it into the skin for a few minutes will remove dead skin cells. Similarly, mixing equal parts of lemon juice, sugar and water and rubbing the mixture into the skin until nearly it's dry provides thorough exfoliation.
