Dry hands can be a problem anytime, but especially during cold weather. You can soothe chapped, dry hands with a selection of natural oils that can add moisture and rejuvenate dry skin cells. Natural oils are hypoallergenic and contain vitamins that help protect your skin from damage caused by free radicals, sun exposure and environmental hazards.


Extra virgin olive oil, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil are among the types of oil that can benefit dry hands. Many commercially available skin care products contain one of these natural oils as a primary ingredient.


Apply a few drops to a dime-size amount of extra virgin olive oil to damp hands. The moisture helps reduce the feeling of greasiness. Apply sweet almond oil or jojoba oil directly to dry hands; your skin will readily absorb the oil. You can also mix a few drops in with your favorite hand cream to increase the moisturizing effects.


Oil applied directly to dry hands creates a shield of moisture that lasts longer than lotions or creams. Sweet almond oil is technically an emollient, rather than a moisturizer. As an emollient, sweet almond oil hydrates dry skin to replenish lost moisture. Sweet almond oil also helps relieve itchiness, soreness, rashes and burns in addition to helping maintain a moisture balance in the skin. Jojoba oil is a moisturizer that penetrates the skin quickly, but it has also been used for centuries to treat cuts, sores and bruises.


Extra virgin olive oil and sweet almond oil contain vitamins A and E which are strong antioxidants. Antioxidants can stimulate skin cells naturally to help repair and renew dry, damaged skin. Jojoba oil contains vitamins E, B and C. Jojoba is also antibacterial oil that can help other oils from becoming rancid.


Another way to use olive oil for dry hands is to make a rub by mixing extra virgin olive oil with sea salt, and then massage it onto your hands. The sea salt helps slough off dry skin and the olive oil rejuvenates.


Almond oil is not safe for anyone with nut allergies. Almond oil and olive oil can stain fabric, even though they are light colored. Jojoba oil does not stain fabric.
