How to Get Rid of Redness & Dark Spots on Skin

The redness on your face may be caused by rosacea and the dark spots on your skin could be age spots. Rosacea forms when your blood vessels cannot pump out the blood from your veins properly. The veins start leaking, irritating your skin and making it red. Sun, stress and makeup irritate your rosacea, and its red color is the hardest symptom to treat. Age spots form when you expose your skin to too much sun. Neither rosacea nor age spots can be cured, but there are several ways you can control the symptoms and reduce the red and dark spots on your skin.

Step 1

Stay out of the sun. Sun causes the rosacea in your skin to flare up and the dark spots on your skin to get even darker. Cover up the skin with a hat and sunglasses, and if you have to be out in the sun, wear sunscreen with at least a sun protection factor of 15. Also make sure the skin products you use on your face are nonallergenic and chemical free. The National Rosacea Society says chemical additives can make your rosacea worse.

Step 2

Try skin cream for the redness and dark spots on your skin. The Mayo Clinic recommends over-the counter creams with hydroquinone, vitamin C and retinol to reduce your brown spots. You can also go to your dermatologist to get a prescription for retinoids and mild steroids. Antibiotics are the best medication for the redness in your skin. Antibiotics have anti-inflammatory agents that reduce the redness of your rosacea. Common topical medications for rosacea are tretinoin and benzoyl peroxide.

Step 3

Don't touch your face. When you put your hands to your face, you transfer all the dirt and bacteria onto your skin. Clean your face with a gentle cleanser every night. Wear a scarf around your face when it's windy and cold out to protect your face.

Step 4

Exfoliate your skin to get rid of your dark spots. Buy a loofah and gentle cleansing soap at the drugstore. In the shower or tub, firmly rub over your age spots. This will remove the top layer of dead skin on your age spots, which will get rid of the skin that has the most melanin and reduce the color of your age spots. Only scrub the skin that has the age spots. The redness and rosacea on your skin should not be scrubbed roughly, as it will irritate it even more.
