Overview

The dark spots on your elbows are referred to by doctors as lentigines, or age spots. Age spots pop up on the skin of your elbows when you are out in the sun for longs periods of time over years. When you are out in the ultraviolets rays of light, or UV rays, your skin increases the amount of melanin it produces. Melanin is responsible for making dark spots on your skin because melanin makes your skin a darker tone. While dark and age spots usually appear in people who are older than 40, you can get dark spots on your elbows at just about any age. You can get rid of the dark spots by using natural ingredients and the right medication.

Step 1

Use lemon juice on the dark spots on your skin. Lemon juice is filled with a natural bleaching agent that can, over time, get rid of the dark spots. Dip a cotton ball into a bowl of lemon juice and rub into the dark spots and let the liquid evaporate. You can also dip your elbow into a bowl of lemon juice. Let your elbow sit in the liquid for at least 5 minutes.

Step 2

Use buttermilk on the dark spots on your body. Just like lemon juice, buttermilk has a natural ingredient in it that can over time, help get rid of the dark spots. Buy a carton of buttermilk at your grocery store and pour about a cup into a bowl. You can either dip a cotton ball in the liquid and rub into the dark spots on your skin or dip your elbow directly into the buttermilk. Either way, let the buttermilk soak into your skin.

Step 3

Stay away from direct sunlight to get rid of dark spots. The Mayo Clinic says you develop dark or age spots on your skin in the areas that are most exposed to the sun. Therefore, the easiest way you can get rid of dark spots is to stay away from the sun. If you must be out in the sun, shield your skin from the sun with a long-sleeved shirt and wear a sunblock with an SPF of at least 30.

Step 4

Go to your pharmacy to get an over-the-counter medication. The Mayo Clinic says you should use a medication that contains the ingredients retinol, hydroquinone or vitamin C. If these do not work, call your dermatologist for an appointment. He can prescribe a medication that will help your skin produce new skin cells at a faster rate.
